Oil is a fossil fuel which is produced from organic material under extreme heat and pressure.  The organic matter which consisted of deceased plants and animals, sank to the ocean floor millions of years ago where they were covered with layers of sand and silt.

The heat and pressure produced by increasing layers of sediment created changes in the molecular structure of the mixture.  The hydrogen and carbon atoms bonded, forming hydrocarbons in rock structures.  These hydrocarbon-saturated rocks of limestone or sandstone are the source of all oil production.
